WHO SAYS INSPIRED HOMES AND SMART SPACE PLANS ARE ONLY FOR THE ELITE? M+A STUDIO IS ON A
MISSION TO PROVE THEY ARE NOT

As a young couple with a new baby, Rodney and Amy Finger had settled into their first home and were, like most families, “making it work,” says Amy. “But we always wanted something more. We wanted a small, modern, livable space.”
With these desires in mind, two events occurred so closely that no one involved can say for sure which came first. Amy and Rodney found a house they wanted to buy. It had good bones, the location was excellent (near work and school in Meyerland) and the price was right. It also, as a 1960s builder’s house, had smelly old carpet, outdated paneling and an odd floor plan.
The second fortuitous event occurred when Amy was flipping through her copy of Dwell magazine and she ran across a feature article on M+A Studio, a.k.a. the Houston husband-and-wife team of Mark Schatz and Anne Eamon. Amy had met them before through an acquaintance and knew, with their versatile talents and budget-conscious philosophies, that they were the ones to call for help.
With the pieces in place, Schatz and Eamon were given their marching orders. The house existed as a 2,600-square-foot, four-bedroom home. Amy and Rodney wanted to keep four bedrooms, plus gain a home office and a playroom. They wanted to maximize storage and update the aesthetics for a streamlined, uncluttered look. And all of this needed to be done on a budget. Not only for the sake of their bank account, but, “We needed to stay within the reasonable range for this neighborhood’s real estate,” says Rodney. “We didn’t want to wind up with a $500,000 house in a $300,000 neighborhood.”
